What to Check at a Wedding Menu Tasting

A tasting should test your menu decisions and the way food will be served. Review portions, presentation, service sequence and guest requirements alongside flavor.

Prepare a focused tasting brief

Agree which dishes need a decision and which parts of the menu are already settled. Share the event format, timing, guest profile and any known dietary requirements with the caterer in advance. Ask how the tasting portions and presentation compare with event service. Bring a small group of decision-makers who can give one consolidated response. A tasting becomes less useful when everyone evaluates a different menu or has no agreed priorities.

Discuss the service experience

Ask how dishes will be replenished, presented and served at your expected attendance. Review the order of service and how the menu works alongside ceremonies or performances. Discuss beverage stations, desserts and queues without relying on a sample table to represent the complete event. Ask the caterer to explain allergen information and how requested dietary meals will be identified and delivered by their team.

Record decisions before leaving

Make notes for each sampled item: retain it, revise it, replace it or request another review. Describe the change precisely instead of using broad feedback such as make it better. Confirm who approves substitutions if an ingredient or dish becomes unavailable. Ask for an updated written menu that incorporates the agreed changes and relevant service details. Keep that version with the accepted proposal so the team does not work from an earlier tasting list.

Quick checklist

  • Choose the dishes that need a decision.
  • Share guest and dietary requirements in advance.
  • Compare tasting presentation with event service.
  • Agree precise changes and substitution approval.
  • Request the final written menu.

Should every dish be tasted?

Prioritize dishes central to the menu and items you are uncertain about. Ask the caterer which samples will best demonstrate the event service you are booking.

Put the guide into practice

Prepare your event brief, then discuss the exact location, date and scope with suppliers.
